Inspire My Creativity - Fabric Decorated Galvanized Bucket

It's so easy to add a little extra color and style to an already cute storage bin or bucket, when you take 15 minutes to do a little decor makeover. I have a simple makeover that will look great in any room!

I love shopping at thrift stores and looking for the perfect item that is waiting for a  makeover. Some of my favorite projects (this sign and this Lego Dollhouse Tray for example) have been items I've found at our local thrift store and used a little imagination and a bit of makeover magic to create something that I really love. Join me for a look at this easy makeover to a cute little galvanized bucket I found during one of my recent trips to the thrift store.

This oh-so-easy tutorial today will show you how you can add some cute patterns to a plain container. I hope this helps you get an idea of what you can do to personalize items for your own home.

This project is part of a brand new crafting group that my friend Shani from Sunshine and Munchkins has put together. Once a month all the co-hosts of Inspire My Creativity are assigned a theme/technique/item to use to create a project. We will all share our tutorials, and also add a link up area that anyone can add their own project to that has to do with the same topic that we have posted about.

Check the end of the post for the other projects and if you are a blogger, leave a link to your own project.

Fabric Decorated Storage Bin

Two weeks ago when I was on my weekly thrift store run, I found a cute little denim covered galvanized bucket. I picked it up because it was $.75 and I knew I could find a use for it. It's hard to pass up such a great deal!

This project is pretty easy and quick to make. With just a few supplies and half an hour you will have a new decorated storage bucket!

Galvanized Bucket - I can't find any with the fabric covering. This one was originally sold in the At Home store, but I couldn't find the item online. You can find a similar bucket sold here.
Fabric - You will only need about 4 inches. I had a stockpile of fat quarters on hand and used that.
Fabric Scissors
Regular Scissors
Mod Podge - Use the Fabric formula
Foam Brush
Pencil
Piece of thin cardboard
Hole Punch
Craft Mat - optional, but useful for protecting your crafting space from the sticky Mod Podge

Simple Tutorial to Make Fabric Decorated Galvanized Buckets

1. Use a round paint bottle or jar to trace different size circles onto a piece of thin cardboard. You can use a circle craft punch if you want all the circles to be the same size. Use the regular scissors to cut the circles out.

2. On the back side of the fabric, trace as many circles as you think you will use. I did two large circles and 4 smaller ones for each side of my bucket.

3. Use your fabric scissors to cut the circles you traced onto the back of the fabric.

4. With the foam brush, spread the Fabric Mod Podge onto the back side of the fabric circles. The fabric formula is very thick, so you want to spread it out in a thin layer. Place the circles onto the bucket in a decorative way.

5. When I had the circles onto the bucket, I decided that I wanted to add some small circles amid the larger ones. I used a hole punch to make fabric confetti. Using the eraser end of the pencil, I dipped it in the mod podge and added the tiny fabric confetti to my decorative bin.

And that's it! This fabric decorated bucket is a cute piece that is ready to use in the home. My girls saw it and decided right away that they wanted to use it.

It now holds their beauty and hair products, which is nice because before this everything was scattered over three rooms. They asked if we could find a few other bins to decorate, so it looks like I will have to make more trips to the thrift store to find some more.
