Favorite Finds from the Thrift Store

Thrift store shopping is a fun adventure, you never know what hidden treasures you will find. You can find so many quality items when you look at thrift stores. Today I am sharing some of my favorite finds at a recent thrift store shopping trip!

Favorite finds at the thrift store - books, decor pieces, clothes

I was introduced to thrift stores when I was in college. Yep, those years when money is tight or you are looking for vintage or funny items you normally wouldn't buy. What started out as a necessity, ended up being something that I really enjoy. I like looking through the racks of clothes, shelf after shelf of books, the decorations that people have donated. I call it treasure hunting!

Recently I went on a bloggers tour of a local thrift store that was opening. (You can see my post about it here) A few of the ladies said that they had never shopped at a thrift store before. We played a game where we had to guess the thrift store price and retail price of items. Those same ladies were amazed at the high quality items for such a low price.

At the grand opening of the Deseret Industries store, I was able to find some awesome items! I brought home 5 bags full of wonderful decor pieces, clothes, books, and dishware - all for a great low price. I told my Instagram and Facebook followers that I would be sharing soon the neat items I was able to find, and today is that day!

Favorite Finds from the Thrift Store

home decor pieces, vintage items, kitchenware from Deseret Industries thrift store

These are a few of the decor and kitchen pieces I found. When I went on my tour to Deseret Industries before it was open, I saw the white decorative lantern and knew that I wanted to take it home with me. Thankfully it was still there when I was shopping on opening day.

The tea cup wasn't part of a set. I have been slowly buying pieces to make a childrens tea set for my youngest daughter. I pick up pieces at the different local thrift stores when I find them. That day I also bought a sugar bowl and cream pitcher that matched.

Most of the decor items I will use for my mantle or for different photos on my blog. I can imagine hanging the rustic birdcage candle holder in my craft room. I would love to fill it with colored fabric scraps.

Books found at local thrift store

When I visit thrift stores I always check out their book section. When I'm not crafting, you can usually find a book in my hand. My oldest daughter is the exact same way. I was able to find all of these books at such a great discount! The paperback books were .50 and the hardback books were $2 or $3. A few of these will be Christmas or birthday presents this year. None of the books have writing in them, stains, or ripped pages.

Rustic Plant Stand Decor Piece from Thrift Store

I love this plant stand that I spotted in the yard area of the thrift store. Each season I try to have some flowers on my porch....try being the operative word since I don't exactly have a green thumb. This stand would look nice in the spring and summer with a pot of colorful flowers on it.

I was also able to find quite a few clothes at the thrift store. I bought some cute tops, dresses, and sweaters for both of my daughters, as well as a few skirts for myself and a soft and colorful cardigan I can't wait to wear. Quite a few of the pieces were from name brand stores, all of them were high quality pieces. None of them had stains, tears, missing buttons, or broken zippers.

I was able to pick up a few crafting items too! I bought some soft yarn skeins, a few paper punches, and a few stretched canvas. I've mentioned in some of my craft posts that I buy a lot of my supplies from thrift stores. Most of my wood projects or canvas projects were originally bought at thrift stores (you can see makeovers here and here) and I made them over. Adding a few layers of paint can work wonders!

Are you surprised by the quality and cuteness of items that I found when shopping at a thrift stores? I decided to do a little price comparison myself. I searched different sites on the internet for prices that these items were selling for right now. Not the original retail price, but if you were to search Amazon, Ebay, the brands website, or google shopping for the item.

I spent a total of $65.92 including tax for my five bags of clothes, decor pieces, books, and kitchenware. Not all my great finds are pictured. After looking up prices for everything bought, I was pretty surprised by my savings. If I had bought these same items through the internet, I would have spent $374.85! I saved $308.93! If I had had to pay retail price, I wouldn't have bought any of the cute items I found.

Here is a look at just a few of the items and a  price comparison

  3. I was raised on yard sales & thrift shops- and still go mostly for the thrill of the hunt. Just last week I found a pair of Classic short Uggs no sign of ever being worn for $5 - at least $120+ savings.
