Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

I have a tasty ice cream recipe to share with you today, an ice cream maker giveaway sponsored by some great bloggers, and a roundup of  25 homemade ice cream recipes.  I hope you are ready for some ice cream goodness on this wonderful Monday!

Last summer I went to the local farmer's markets almost every Saturday morning.  I love to see the fresh vegetables and fruits that are offered.  I bought quite a few peaches, blackberries, apricots, and cherries that I made into jams, froze for smoothies, and made into ice cream.  This recipe for Cherry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream was our favorite from last year.  Our farmers market just opened and they had some beautiful and tasty organic cherries.  I had to buy them for us to snack on and make this ice cream again.  It turned out wonderful.  I thought I would share the recipe with you so you can enjoy this frozen treat on a warm summer day.

My recipe made 8 cups (2 quarts) of creamy and smooth ice cream.

Ingredient amounts, tools needed, and specific directions are located below.

First you need to remove the stems and pits of the cherries.  The easiest way to do this is with a cherry pitter.  I bought mine last summer for about $12.  I used it quite a bit because I picked cherries at a local orchard last summer and ended up with 5 pounds of cherries.  Having one of these makes the job so much easier than using a paring knife on multiple pounds of cherries and picking the pits out of every single one.

After pitting the cherries, I took about 15 of the cherries and chopped them into large pieces.  The other portion of cherries I kept whole because they would be used in the blender.

Next I chopped the chocolate chips.  I used dark chocolate chips because that is our favorite.  I wasn't precise with how small or big the pieces of chocolate were when I was chopping it.  Some ended up being more like shavings, and some were large chunks.  Having both sizes lets you have the small pieces blended well into the ice cream but you also have the larger pieces for an extra taste of chocolate.

Next add the milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract and almond extract to your blender.  Blend for about 15-20 seconds until the sugar is mixed well.  Add the whole cherries and blend again until smooth.

Pour your cherry cream mixture into a bowl.  Add the chopped cherries and chocolate to your cream mixture.  Mix lightly.

Pour your mixture into your ice cream canister.  Place in your ice cream maker and follow the directions for your ice cream maker to make your frozen treat.

When layering your ice and salt around your ice cream canister, using rock salt is really the best.  I made a few batches of ice cream using regular salt and it didn't thicken up like it was supposed to.

The churning of my ice cream only took about 25 minutes.  After it is thickened, transfer it to a freezer safe container and let sit for at least 2-3 hours.  Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients
1 c milk
1 1/2 c heavy whipping cream
3/4 c sugar
1 t vanilla extract
1/4 t almond extract
1 pound cherries, pitted and chopped (about 2 1/4 c)
1/2 c chocolate chips, chopped

Tools needed
Knife
cherry pitter
cutting board
blender
medium size mixing bowl
ice cream maker
rock salt

Directions

  1. Chop chocolate chips into chunks.  Chop 15 cherries, reserving the remainder.
  2. Add milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and almond extract to your blender.  Blend for about 20 seconds.  Add the reserved whole cherries to the blender and blend until smooth.
  3. Pour cherry cream mixture into a medium bowl and add chopped cherries and chocolate. Mix lightly with a spoon.
  4. Add mixture to ice cream canister and churn according to ice cream maker directions.
  5. Transfer to a freezer safe container and freeze for at least 2 hours.  Serve and enjoy!

    1. I know what you mean about the price! I'm waiting until the local orchard has their cherries....it was only $1.00 per pound to pick our own. My kids had fun, we enjoyed the fresh air, and it was a bargain! Good luck on the giveaway.
