The Best and Lightest contains 150 recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and sweets that have been created in the Food Network Kitchen for their magazine. Reading through this book and looking at the wonderful pictures, my mouth started watering and it was hard to decide which recipe to make first.

There are 9 sections in this book. At the beginning of the book is a recipe index with small thumbnail pictures of each recipe in the different sections.

  • Soups and Stews
  • Sandwiches
  • Poultry
  • Meat
  • Fish & Seafood
  • Eggs, Tofu & Beans
  • Pasta & Grains
  • Side Dishes
  • Sweets
Yes, you read that right. Pasta and sweets are included! It isn't 150 recipes of just salads and veggies. At the end of each section there is also a bonus Snack Time double page. So you get 150 main recipes, then you get 4 or 5 snack tips at the end of each section.

Each recipe has it's own beautiful full page picture on one side and the directions on the other.  Most recipes seem to take about 20-35 minutes, some take a bit longer.

Of course, any professional photographer can make food look appetizing. What is the guarantee that the recipes taste good?  Well, I decided to try out one of the recipes to see how it tasted.

I decided to make the Lemon-Garlic Shrimp and Grits. My husband is from South Carolina and this seemed like a recipe that he would like. It was quite tasty. I am looking forward to trying a few more of the recipes in the upcoming weeks.

I think this is a nice collection of healthy recipes that have been created and tested by professionals in the culinary world. Not every single recipe will appeal to every person, but there is such a variety to choose from that I believe you will be able to find quite a few that are worth your time.

I'm off to choose the next recipe to try. Probably the Potato Leek Soup with Bacon, or the Turkey Avocado Sandwiches, or maybe the Three Cheese Macaroni. Oh the choices. Happy cooking!
