My daughters are getting older and lately they have wanted to change the style and color of their rooms (see a recent project here), but I wanted to make sure that what we add to their rooms isn't too expensive. Making our own decor pieces makes sure we have exactly what color and style we want, as well as being proud of what we created and loving it all the more.

This oh-so-easy tutorial will show you how you can add a soft and colorful accent to your home. Pick your favorite colors and patterns of fabric and you will soon have a lovely piece to add to your room.

This project is part of the monthly challenge for the Inspire My Creativity group. Once a month there is a theme and all of the co-hosts create a new project, then we open the link party to anyone who wants to add a project having to do with the theme.

Check the end of this post for more inspiration on using an embroidery hoop. If you are a blogger, feel free to leave a link to any post you have where you use an embroidery hoop.

Easy DIY Fabric Strip Chandelier

I was really excited to have this months challenge be to use an embroidery hoop in a project. I thought about quite a few different project that would be fun to work on (look for some other projects in the future!) with my stash of different size hoops. I finalized my idea for making a fabric strip chandelier (or mobile) and we headed to the fabric store to pick out a nice blend of colors and prints of fabric.

Both my girls loved the way this DIY project turned out and I have a feeling that we will be making another trip to the fabric store to choose some more fabric for the other bedroom that doesn't have one.

Supplies Needed to Make a Fabric Strip Chandelier

crafting supplies needed to make fabric strip chandelier

Embroidery Hoop - I used an 8" hoop, but you can use a 10" or larger
Cute Fabric - I bought 1/8 of a yard of 6 fabrics and it was perfect for my size hoop
Twine - Bakers Twine, Yarn, or Cotton Twine

Quick and Easy Tutorial to Make a Fabric Strip Chandelier or Mobile

The step-by-step photo tutorial for this project will make creating your own piece so easy! Collect your supplies and get crafting!

fabric ripped into strips ready to tie onto embroidery hoop

1. Trim one end of fabric (at a short end), about 3/4 or 1 inch wide. Starting at the trimmed spot, rip the fabric, so it makes a frayed strip. Your strip of fabric will be about 42" long. I varied the thickness of my strips to make it interesting. Some of the pieces will end up shorter at one end because of the weave of the fabric.

2. You will only need to use the inside ring of the embroidery hoop. Tie two pieces of twine to your hoop making an "x" on the top of the hoop.

3. Fold your fabric in half, making a loop at the top of the fabric. Hold that behind the embroidery hoop so just a bit of the loop is above the hoop.

4. Pull the ends of the fabric through the loop and lightly tighten until it is secure. The top of the loop is on the inside of the embroidery hoop, with the two halves of the fabric hanging down.

5. Continue to add your fabric strips until the hoop is filled. If you use a larger embroidery hoop, you will need more strips of fabric to make the chandelier full.

6. Cut the amount of twine you will need to hang the mobile/chandelier. Tie one end of the twine to the middle of the "x" you made with twine before, double knotting to make it secure. Hang and you are done!

That's it! You are done in about 10-15 minutes and have a nice new decor piece to add to your home - whether a permanent addition to a room or for a party decoration!
